What is Gum Surgery?

Your gum surrounding your teeth is similar to a frame of a solid house, they are effectively responsible to provide form and shape to the top or bottom of your teeth. In fact your less attractive smile results from weak gum composition. This is usually due to poor or inadequate hygiene of your gum, known as gum disease. Which can result in the decay of gum tissue.

A type of cosmetic dentistry called gum surgery can help restore your gum from their deteriorated state. And although there are a few choices in the type of gum surgery here is the best one.

Laser gum surgery

How this process works is that a laser with a rather small amount of energy is targeted with great precision at the decayed portions of the gum. The laser then removes the tissue which is decayed, thus eliminating infection in tissues. This whole process is executed without any type of incision or cut. This is so because the laser immediately cauterizes (use of heat to close the effected area to prevent bleeding) the wound, resulting in very less to no bleeding. The use of the laser is so precise and effective that the patient only experiences minor discomfort.

How do I know that I’m having gum disease?

Early symptoms:

* Gum bleeding while brushing and eating

* Red, swollen, tender gums

* Teeth sensitivity to sweets, cold and hot foods

* Bad breath

Advanced symptoms:

* Gum abscess (pus collection)

* Receding gums ( teeth appearing long)

* Loose or shaking teeth

* Change in bite

How long does laser gum therapy take?

In most cases, one to two-hour sessions are all that are needed to treat periodontal disease (although ongoing care is necessary over the years to further protection of teeth).Usually traditional gum therapy generally takes longer, including several 1 hour sessions.

What are the benefits of laser gum therapy?

  • Less (or no) pain
  • Faster healing
  • Less (or no) bleeding
  • Minimized swelling
  • Reduced risk of infection

What is the recovery like?

Most patients are able to return to home after some time when procedure is done or least next day. Any soreness is usually managed just fine with over the time pain medications such as ibuprofen.
